Beaten in the Basement

Beaten in the Basement - Tom Raimbault

This unusual short story starts out with a man attending a convention at a hotel who is picked up and thrown down the stairs. As he lies on the basement floor with a bloody nose, broken wrist, and near unconsciousness, he is fortunate to find a phone and is able to reach the hotel operator to get assistance. While the operator attempts to call for help, the attacker returns several more times.

The interaction between the victim and the hotel clerk and the odd events made me chuckle. The story gradually became more bizarre and I didn’t see the twist coming.

I feel a little dirty for enjoying it.
